Pier Luigi Nervi and football stadiums – A successful model

On the basis of the works on show in the exhibition Strutture Romane. Montuori, Musmeci, Nervi, the Archives Centre is organizing a cycle of encounters exploring the great themes of the history of engineering, from the 20th Century to the present day, tackling the issue of the safeguarding of these works and reflecting on their preservation and valorization.

MAXXI Architettura Archives Centre Study Hall, admittance free while places available

An extraordinary designer, theorist, lecturer, constructor and businessman, Pier Luigi Nervi was one of the protagonists of 20th Century architecture and engineering whose rich documentary archive is conserved in the MAXXI Architettura Archives Centre. From the ‘Giovanni Berta” civic stadium in Florence (1929-32) to the Kuwait Sports Center (1968-69), sports facilities and stadiums represent a perfect opportunity to trace the evolution of Nervi’s design philosophy and his constructional methods, focussing on the very close relationship between technology and aesthetics, between constructional sincerity and beauty in a built work.
A story that anticipates the results of lengthy research of international breadth to be presented in the exhibition “Pier Luigi Nervi. The football stadiums” at MAXXI in 2015.
