A day of scientific knowledge sharing dedicated to sound
To mark 2018 Researchers’ Night and in the context of the exhibition When sound becomes form, MAXXI and Scienzainsieme have organised a day of workshops and live science demonstrations focussing on sound.
The human ear is a very sophisticated sensor; the sounds that reach it are not simply pieces of auditory information, but they also describe the environment in which we listen to them. That which reaches our ear is in fact the result of a combination of the sound wave generated by a particular source and something called an impulse response, namely the contribution made by the environment in which the wave is propagated. Applied acoustics supplies us with the tools to construct three-dimensional sound environments, the result of being able to reproduce particular sounds in a manner similar to that which a listener would experience if they could listen to them at the time and in the place where they were actually produced. Here, then, the experience of listening can transport us into a true virtual reality, to places that are the products of our mind, of our perception.
11.30 am – 1.30 pm – 3.30 pm – 5.30 pm
