The uniformed soldier Desmond Doss’s religion refutes war. However, while serving he saved 75 lives at Okinawa: the first conscientious objector to be awarded the United States’ highest military honour. The ferocity of the violence, an obsession of the director of Passione di Cristo and Apocalypto, is at the service of a penetrating examination of the “psychological devastation that war wreaks” (Richard Brody, “The New Yorker”). The film, presented at the Venice Festival was been received as one of the best of 2016 by the international press.
