Through video, installation, drawing, photography and performance, the two artists look at the political, cultural and social changes of the contemporary world.

Jimmie Durham, a protagonist of several exhibitions at MAXXI, among which his solo exhibition Sound and Silliness (2016) and the collective one on the spiritual matter of art (2019), meets MAXXI Artistic Director Hou Hanru to discuss his job with the artist Maria Thereza Alves, with whom he engages a personal and professional partnership since the early ’70s.

If Maria Thereza Alves documents post-colonial, ecological and social transformations and their effects on the environment, Jimmie Durham’s work denounces, also through sculptures, paintings and poems, the drift of the human in the era of globalization, showing in the same time the identity and creativity of marginal communities, always threatened by the economic and ideological arrogance of contemporary society.
