Post-Colonial Italy? Repressed memory

Reframing Indian identity

Saturday 21 January 2012, 18.30
MAXXI Auditorium – admittance free
curated by Viviana Gravano and Giulia Grechi in collaboration with Routes Agency

On the occasion of the exhibition Indian Highway (at MAXXI through to 29 January 2012), the museum is offering a rich programme of collateral events.

The final encounter in the series Found in Translation. Post-Colonial Visions, entitled Post-Colonial Italy? Repressed memory, proposes a reflection on the possibility of circumscribing the conditions and the sense of what may be defined as ‘Italianness’.
In contemporary Italy there is clearly a dangerous gulf between those areas of research that have tackled the issue of post-colonialism and it is this lack of communication that makes difficult and impedes the development of a shared platform of debate on these issues among artists, the public and theorists.

Gillo Pontecorvo’s La battaglia di Algeri and the series of documentaries and projects by Pier Paolo Pasolini that may be grouped under title Appunti per un poema del terzo mondo, may be considered as the premise for a possible post-colonial Italian visual poetic, but fail to lay the basis for the creation of a true research network.
