The artist, a finalist of the MAXXI BVLGARI PRIZE 24, narrates the site-specific work conceived for the competition in the Museum’s Gian Ferrari hall.
Juroom ñaar is inspired by a historical event of 1819 commemorated by the artist with seven columns of coal. Through an investigation into the past of Senegal, her country of origin, Binta Diaw represents an event from the pre-colonial era in which seven women preferred to set themselves on fire rather than yield to the colonisers’ rules.
