Italy, 1512. Michelangelo is involved in two major projects: he has just finished painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and is now working on the tomb of Pope Julius II. When the pope dies suddenly and the Medici take charge of the Vatican, he is now embroiled in the violent, drawn-out conflict between Italy’s two most powerful families. Pressured by his
patrons and plagued by visions he can’t distinguish from reality, Michelangelo is forced to lie and scheme so he can keep both commissions.
