Critic, intellectual, and curator Alberto Boatto is on the margins but also at the centre of the cultural life of his time. He states, “Conceptually, I move in the expanding circle of the gaze from the outside”. Part of the MAXXI Arte Focus Series, the volume edited by Stefano Chiodi, analyses the figure of Alberto Boatto by bringing together essays, in-depth texts, images – some previously unpublished – and a specific bibliography. A fundamental tool for approaching the study of this figure is the section focusing on archive documents, cataloguing more than 12,000 papers that make up the fund from Alberto Boatto’s private archive donated to MAXXI and presented on the exhibition dedicated to him. Correspondence, administrative documents, photographic materials, audio, video and books render the complex universe of this intellectual who eludes all attempts at classification.
