From the post-war period to the fervour of reconstruction, from the sleepy Venice of the 1950s to the images documenting the arrival of the large cruise ships in the lagoon, around 200 photographs recount Italy from the 1950s to the present, drawing an evocative map of our country. Published on the occasion of the exhibition at MAXXI, the volume includes two critical texts that contextualise Gianni Berengo Gardin’s work, an interview with the photographer and a wealth of images documenting the exhibition. The result is a vibrant account of our history and the Italian territory, as the author himself says: “I have always loved photographing our country. I like getting to know the people I portray, living in close contact with the subjects I photograph for the time necessary to understand how they live”.
